Melancholia (2011)

I wanted to like Melancholia, I really did. But as Lars Von Trier does at the beginning of every movie, he presents you the themes of the entire movie. And I hated his prologue this time. I thought it was brilliant when he used it in Antichrist, but this time it felt more like he was merely doing it because he thinks it’s cool looking, which makes him no better than Michael Bay in my eyes. I really liked part one, and the beginning of part two, but the story itself is so disjointed that I just disengaged from the movie. As always, it was beautifully shot, but the story just wasn’t there for me this time.
